Yorkshire round-up: Lewis Minikin the star as Harrogate triumph in '˜double-header'

The hosts had 40 points on the board before Ionians got off the mark with second-row Joe Makin and winger Aquile Smith scoring tries which Greg Lound converted.

But Hartpury extended their lead to 68-14 before Lound scored and converted late in the game.

Harrogate ran out 22-20 winners at Yorkshire rivals Otley in a Yorkshire Cup quarter-final and National Two (North) double-header at Cross Green.

Flanker Thomas Harvey, winger Sam Bottomley and full-back Lewis Minikin scored tries for Harrogate, with Minikin kicking two conversions and Callum Irvine slotting over an early drop goal.

Centre Michael Coady and replacement Will Rigg scored tries for Otley, and Stephen Depledge also kicked two penalties and two conversions, but it was not enough to secure the victory.

Elsewhere, relegated Huddersfield’s National Two campaign ended with a 40-14 defeat at South Leicester.

The home side were 40-0 ahead before scrum-half Joel Hinchcliffe and flanker Lewis Bradley had tries converted by Hinchcliffe.

Four penalties from stand-off Greg Wood put Sandal into a 12-7 head at Luctonians, but the home side hit back to win 35-12 at Mortimer Park.

Promotion hopefuls Morley suffered their first home defeat of the season when they were edged out 26-24 by sixth-placed Dinnington in their final North One East match at Scatcherd Lane.

Dinnington’s young side scored four tries to two to avenge a 21-19 defeat on their own ground in November, Morley relying on four penalty goals to keep them in touch.

The visitors opened with a try by flanker Josh Kohika from a catch-and-drive in the Morley 22 and, although Morley levelled the score at 21-21 shortly after half-time, Dinnington held out after centre Chris Williams had squeezed over in the corner 12 minutes from time.

Morley, who had beaten champions Doncaster Phoenix two weeks earlier, need to beat North One West runners-up Kirkby Lonsdale to gain the third promotion place to National Three North.

Beverley, who have finished bottom of North One East, finished on a high note when they came from behind to beat Northern 33-19 in a match played at Driffield.

Winger Rob Smith scored two of Beverley’s four tries, with full-back Luke Hazel and fly-half Phil Duboulay also touching down. Duboulay converted two and added a hat-trick of penalties.

Guisborough, although finishing only one league position above their rivals, ended their North One East campaign with a decisive 29-6 home victory over Wheatley Hills.

Guisborough won by five tries to none, picking up their 14th bonus point of the campaign and restricting the visitors to two first-half penalties from Owen Gillvray.

Malton & Norton, who have finished runners-up in Yorkshire One for a second successive season, earned promotion to North One East when they won 25-17 in their play-off against Middlesbrough, the Durham and Northumberland runners-up, at Acklam Park.

No 8 Josh Heggie scored tries in each half for Malton. Middlesbrough levelled the score at 10-10 just after half-time, but Malton pulled clear and sealed their win when scrum-half Paul Angus touched down for a final try.

West Park Leeds, who have finished bottom in Yorkshire One after just three victories, salvaged two league points in a rousing final match at North Ribblesdale, where both sides ran in six tries and the hosts scraped a 42-41 win.

Promoted Keighley notched seven tries in a 45-7 home win over Knottingley in Yorkshire Two, while Old Rishworthians also collected a bonus in a 28-19 home win over higher-placed Pontefract.
