Pub of the Week: The George and Dragon, Hudswell

A small Dales village with glorious views, walks in abundance but no pub is unthinkable, yet this was exactly the fate of the George and Dragon at Hudswell only a few years ago.

As is, sadly, a common occurrence these days, the heart of the village was set to disappear. But no more. Thanks to the enterprising villagers following several meetings and hefty discussion they devised a carefully managed investment plan and managed to buy the pub.

There followed a simple renovation and furnishing by local volunteers, and today the George is alive and kicking. The bar is busy; food is good and wholesome and entirely fitting of the place, service is warm and friendly. There is also a village shop on-site – also run by volunteers.

Landlord Stuart now runs the place and cooks in the kitchen and on my visit, his mother was behind the bar of this lovely old pub. Awards for the beers are coming in, and a plaque behind the bar proudly announces the George as North West Yorkshire CAMRA Pub of the Year 2016. Hardly a surprise with the number of the keg, cask and guest ales on offer. Check out the staff pegs for favourite beers. Wine choices could do with a little attention though.

A small book showing walks and bike rides from the George and Dragon has also helped put this charming place on the map. Really, what more could you want from a Yorkshire pub?
