Pub of the Week: The Guns Bar, Saltburn

Saltburn is an overlooked seaside town IMHO. It may be frayed round the edges, but I've got a soft spot for faded grandeur.

However, apart from The Ship Inn bang on the magnificent beach, I’ve struggled to find a pub that I’m happy to walk into and sit solo for an hour with a pint and the paper. But I think I’ve discovered one.

Local lad Greg Beaty, who owns a bistro, restaurant and classy grocers in Saltburn, has been busy. He saw a gap for a pub with a difference – a place where people of all ages could enjoy a range of drinks; cask ales, gin, European lagers and wine. An empty shop on Milton Street looked like the perfect location, and after a refurb Beaty threw open the doors in December. He named it Guns Bar after the old pub which used to be sited beneath the Zetland Hotel.

He’s done a great job. It’s a cool, sat-back space with sand-blasted brick walls, scrubbed oak floors, a wood-burning stove and wool-upholstered benches.

There’s an impressive 14 beers, including four cask ales. On the wall behind the bar, find Vedette Extra Blonde Lager, Timmermans Strawberry Beer, Flying Dog Easy IPA, Anchor Brewing IPA, Estrella and Brooklyn Lager. If gin’s your thing there’s a choice of 30.

Food-wise, there are classic bar snacks including pickled eggs, jars of pickled cockles, pork scratchings and nuts. Beaty plans to host live music and a “back yard” is under construction.
