Pub of the Week: The Leopard, Doncaster

Here's a pub which is many things to many people. To some it's one of the area's best live music venues; to others it's a place where they know they can get a good pint and to others it doubles as a tourist information.

Outside it’s blessed with some beautifully glazed tiles and, in the middle of the year, there are some impressive floral displays, all of which cheer up this otherwise unremarkable corner of the town.

It’s a pub which smiles at you as soon as it looks at you, and the greetings are no less warm. In fact, the cheery young barman enquired if I was a member of that fine organisation, Camra – if you are a supporter, many pubs will give you a small discount on a pint. I am, and he did, which made the taste of that glass of Abbeydale even more agreeable.

The menu suits all pockets – from lunchtime simple snacking (the ham baguette is generous), to more substantial evening meals, and a bottle of the house wine comes in at under a tenner. The pub sits on a corner site, and on the ground floor are two bars of generous proportions, one of which is a sort of library-cum-snug affair.

There is background music, which is not to everyone’s taste, but at least it is an eclectic mix, and it doesn’t drown out conversations. And there are plenty of leaflets and handbills, all neatly stacked, about events in the community. Which makes it rather like a tourist information centre, with a fine pint of ale as an added incentive. What’s not to like?
