Video - Record Store Day 2016: What and where to spend your hard-earned cash on in Yorkshire

IT is that time of year once again when music fans across Yorkshire - and, indeed, the whole of the UK - get themselves out of bed perhaps a bit earlier than they normally would on a Saturday morning to go and queue up in all kinds of weather to get their hands on a rare piece of musical magic.

As is the tradition with Record Store Day, this year’s event - on Saturday, April 16 – will bring with it a glut of special (largely) vinyl releases from a wide variety of artists, including the late David Bowie, as well as Soft Cell, The Slits, Public Service Broadcasting, Primal Scream, That Petrol Emotion, Outkast and The Monkees, to name just a few of the many acts - past and present - who are releasing rare copies of their material.

Vinyl Eddie, Earworm Records and The Inkwell are servicing the needs of record-buyers in York, while Revo Records in Halifax and Huddersfield’s Vinyl Tap will also be involved, as will The Record Cafe in Bradford, P&C Music in harrogate and Record Revivals being the furthest outlet in the east of the county in Scarborough.

Further south there is Sheffield’s Record Collector, as well as Steel City neighbours Spinning Discs, LP Record Store, Bear Tree Records and Music Junkee, with Doncaster’s The Notorious Aardvark also getting in on the act.

Barry Everard, owner of Record Collector in Fulwood Road, Sheffield, said the emphasis, for his store, was to make the event as enjoyable as possible for those queueing up to buy the music.

“We do get hysterically busy here on Record Store Day and although a lot of it all is about the bands and the releases, our main focus is about the people who are coming here to buy the records,” said Everard.

“It should be a celebration of the music and an enjoyable experience for the people coming down here.”

In previous years, Record Collector has had bands playing in store, although this year - in association with the city-based Thornbridge Brewery, they will help stage a special RSD-related event at the Bath Hotel on Victoria Street.

Alongside a special Record Collector pop-up store, Tom J Newell will perform a special vinyl DJ set from 1-5pm, before live music takes over from 6pm with The Clench headlining a bill which also includes Amy Lavere, Will Sexton and Paul Miro.

In Leeds, Jumbo Records in the St John’s Centre, will also be staging live music, with 11.30 am MG Boulter kicking off proceedings at 11.30am, before Allusondrugs (12.30pm), Recreations (1.30pm), C Duncan (2.30pm) follow in their footsteps before Nervous Twitch finish off the performances at around 3.30pm.

Store manager, Adam Gillison, said Jumbo had produced a free fanzine once again for the shop’s visitors, while Paul Riddlesworth from Too Pure Records will be in the store on the day for any local acts wishing to have a chat or even pass on their demos.

A brand new jukebox produced by Leeds company Sound Leisure will also be on display, while the store has once again teamed up with ZAPATO brewery to produce a special RSD beer which will be on sale across Yorkshire in a number of pubs and venues.

Back in Sheffield, Spinning Discs, on Chesterfield Road, Meersbrook, is also throwing itself into the event, staging live music at the nearby wearefolk.space venue including Tom Baxendale, Rehash, Antique Doll, The Cojones, A M Charvet, Joni Tuson, Chris Anderson and Low Duo.

4: Heaven 17 - (We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang

Format: 12”

Label: UMC

Promptly banned by the BBC upon release for referring to Ronald Regan, the newly incumbent President of the United States, as a “fascist god in motion”, Heaven 17’s debut single was nevertheless one of the landmark singles of the early-1980s. A frenetic, juddering, jittering unearthly electro groove (thing) with its rousing chorus of “Brothers! Sisters!” the track was a major dance hit in alternative clubs on both sides of the Atlantic for the Sheffield band. Sounding as fresh today as when it was first minted, it is included here with original B-side – B.E.F’s ‘The Decline Of The West’ ‘ and comes in its original picture sleeve.

7: Soft Cell - Sex Dwarf

Format: 12”

Label: UMC

Fresh from scoring the biggest-selling UK single of the year in 1981 with ‘Tainted Love’, Soft Cell careered into a world of trouble shortly afterwards when the tapes of their tongue-in-cheek “video nasty” for ‘Sex Dwarf’ were confiscated by the police and banned for obscenity before they ever saw the light of day. This was not how Smash Hits-friendly electropop stars were supposed to behave! A long-held fan favourite from the synth duo’s debut LP ‘Non Stop Erotic Cabaret’, ‘Sex Dwarf’ has never been given a single release in the UK until now and pressed onto lurid pink vinyl (VERY Soft Cell) the 12” brings together the full-length album version plus the 1982 ‘Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing’ and 2007 The Grid remixes.

8: Squeeze - Goodbye Girl

Format: 7”

Label: UMC

A splendid yellow-vinyl super-scarce seven to celebrate South London’s sublimely superb Squeeze. Released in November 1978, ‘Goodbye Girl’ was the first single to be taken from their second album, ‘Cool For Cats’.

One of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook’s most enduring melodies, ‘Goodbye Girl’ has been held in high regard for years, and has rarely been out of the group’s live set.

One of the few Squeeze singles of that era NOT to be released in coloured vinyl, that situation has been conclusively rectified for 2016, and this limited edition comes in a glorious cover-matching yellow. Love for Squeeze grows stronger year by year.

9: Space - Spiders

Format: Picture Disc

Label: Demon Records

Demon Records presents the platinum selling debut album ‘Spiders’ by Space on its 20th Anniversary with a stunning picture disc showcasing the original artwork.
