Majestic in York is running a series of structured wine tastings on Thursday evenings. Up-coming topics include a general introduction to wine tasting, Chile and New Zealand. The tastings are free and, apparently, have been endowed by Majestic with a serious budget, so you do get to taste some good wines. If you want to learn more about wine this seems a good place to start. Phone 01904 659191.

Tastings in Leeds

Friday night between 5 and 7 is tasting night in Leeds at Latitude in The Calls. For the rest of June, New Zealand is under the spotlight, with Pinot Noirs from Stoneleigh and Wild Earth on show next Friday, followed, on June 26, by Sauvignons from Dog Point and Saint Clair. These tastings are free and there is a 10 per cent discount on all New Zealand wines when you buy two or more bottles.

... and yet another

Several years ago, Barrels and Bottles moved from Sheffield city centre to smart new premises just over the county border, but it seems that their customers moved with them. On Wednesday, June 17, I will be hosting a tasting of their wines, starting at 7pm on their open-topped bus with Champagne and ending up in their tasting room with a light supper. Tickets cost £28. 01246 453399.
