Fireman working on Dalesman steam train on the Settle to Carlisle line dies on board
Travel company West Coast Railways, which organises heritage rail tours, confirmed that fireman Mike Middleton died as the Dalesman service passed Garsdale on Tuesday.
He was working alongside the driver in the steam locomotive's cab for the journey between York and Carlisle, and was suddenly taken ill on board.

Hide AdThe Carnforth-based business said in a statement: "West Coast Railway Company are deeply saddened at loosing our fireman Mike Middleton last night near Garsdale after being taken ill. Our thoughts are with his family at this awful time. Thank you for all the kind messages received from our passengers and friends."
Mr Middleton's sister Pat Stanton added: "I'm overwhelmed by the wonderful messages about my brother. Thanks to those who were with him on his last night. He was never happier than when working on engines. No date (for his funeral) yet but it will be at Lancaster crematorium."
Paediatric nurse Lauren Watson, who was a passenger on the special charter train, said: "RIP Mike. I was on the train and was blown away by the bravery and professionalism of the staff on board. Sending condolences to all of his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time."
