Students to be offered a course in 'Yorkshire grit'
But now pupils at one independent school in the county are set to take an actual course in ‘Yorkshire grit’ as part of their weekly timetable.
Charles Ellison, the headmaster at Scarborough College said the new session built on the school’s tradition of instilling character and tenacity in its students.

Now all pupils in years seven, eight and nine will spend an afternoon every week in a lesson aimed at “challenging them, building their confidence and improving their mental and physical well-being.”
The school said it would include activities such as surfing, sailing at Wykeham Lakes, boot camps, rock climbing, learning judo and expedition training. Students will also do courses in public speaking, mindfulness and dealing with stress.
Mr Ellison said: “Throughout the decades of its history, pupils from Scarborough College have been recognised to have strong character traits which, alongside their excellent academic credentials, have ensured that they have made a real difference in the world they entered when finally leaving us.

“Our establishment of a course in Yorkshire Grit synthesises these elements into the timetable to make certain all of our local pupils fully nurture their Yorkshire genetics and that our international boarders assume important Yorkshire traits which will undoubtedly help them to grow as people and to flourish in a world that presents greater and greater challenges to our young people.”
