Wycombe Wanderers v Sheffield Wednesday: Darren Moore keen to stamp out any post-FA Cup complacency

Darren Moore has been on red alert this week.

After last week's tremendous FA Cup win over Newcastle United, it is back down to business at Adams Park on Saturday.

The Owls have an 18-game unbeaten run to protect and if they were going to lose in early January, the brutal reality is they would rather it had been against the Magpies than at Wycombe Wanderers with precious League One points at stake.

They may not have the spending power of Newcastle, but Gareth Ainsworth's Wycombe are not soft touches. Recent scalps include promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town and Peterborough United.

So Moore has been watching training extra closely for signs any of his players enjoyed their moment in the spotlight a bit too much.

"I said to the players anybody we'd have been playing – any team in the division – was going to be a tough game because of what happened last Saturday," warns Moore. "It was on prime-time TV, everyone was watching it and the news that has come out of it but that for me is gone. Hopefully for the players it should be gone because Saturday is a really important game.

"The fans can eulogise about Newcastle and be in a joyful mood but we have to get our professional hats on and get back to the basics.

"While you don't want to take away the camaraderie of the group, at the same time you don't want to be complacent after one result. That's all it is.

"The (FA Cup) game's been and we gave a real good account of ourselves – it had to be that way, we knew that. Now we get back to the league programme.

"When (the Newcastle Cup tie) was first drawn I said it was a fixture that made me pleased for the fans more than anything, and what an experience for both sets of supporters that we got the win and the performance.

"I don't want to take anything away from the players because it was an exceptional performance but we have to get back to the league programme. We've got a real tough game where we'll be tested beyond doubt."

Wycombe are exactly the sort of team who will pounce on any League One player too big for his coloured boots.

The caricature of them is a physical, strong, direct side and whilst all those things are true, Moore knows there is more too them.

"They have got the aerial and the percentage game but they've got one or two (players who are) very good with their feet," he says. "We're aware of the threats they carry.

"What Gareth's done with his squad, every year he's added that bit more quality.

"It makes them very dangerous and we've got to be ready for that. We've got to try and nullify them."

They will do so without the injured Barry Bannan, but with Lee Gregory back in the squad.

"Greggers has trained and he's back as part of the squad," says his manager.

"I was really pleased to have him back and that's about that, really, in terms of more bodies.

"We're not putting any pressure on Baz (Bannan), we're just allowing him and the medical team to keep doing their rehab work."

With leaders Plymouth Argyle at third-placed Ipswich, there is a possibility for the Owls to open up a gap on the Tractor Boys, or swap places with them. It is not something Moore is prepared to waste any energy thinking about.

"For me it's just focusing on (Sheffield) Wednesday," he insists. "I just see Sheffield Wednesday as my responsibility, trying to stay consistent in our results."
