Arts Diary: Will Marriott

Larger than life comedian Phill Jupitus is going to be taking to the stage in Bradford next March. The corpulent funnyman, a regular on comedy show Never Mind the Buzzcocks and QI will be taking the role of King Arthur, in Spamalot. The Monty Python musical is at the Alhambra from March 14 to 19 and Jupitus is taking over the role from Marcus Brigstocke. Tickets are now on sale for the stage show on 01274 432000.

Earlier this week Lisa Riley began rehearsals for Cinderella at the Grand Opera House York where she takes on the role of Wicked Stepmother – and it's going to be a busy winter for Lisa as she will be going straight into another big hit and joining the cast of Calendar Girls – playing the part of Ruth – as soon as the panto run finishes. Lisa became a household name playing popular character Mandy Dingle in Emmerdale, and hosting You've Been Framed for five years. No doubt she's now hoping to avoid any You've Been Framed moments on stage. Lisa's co stars in Cinderella include fellow Emmerdale actors Stuart Wade and Syd Little.

The PR person for a new British film has been in touch to tell us about a screening – but we wonder what she was insinuating with one particular comment.

The film is BIFA nominated Brilliantlove, which opened on November 12 and is touring the UK as part of the Soda Picture's programme New British Cinema Quarterly.

On December 12 it will be screened at Leeds Hyde Park Picturehouse and director Ashley Horner and local screenwriter Sean Conway, from Batley, will be there for a Q&A. The next day, December 13, the film is screening at Sheffield Showroom, followed by a Q&A with Horner.

The PR person told us that it is being called "the most explicit British film since 9 Songs" before adding "It should find a great audience in both Sheffield and Leeds."

Ah, we love a good pun – so how could we resist the competition: The Northern Art Pies?

In association with the Northern Art Prize, the Northern Art Pies Competition winner was announced last week.

The winning pie was called 'Coronation inspired Skipton Sheep' a concoction of curried lamb, chickpeas and mung beans and was suggested by Thomas Atcheson.

The pie was shortlisted by social media and bloggers at the Leeds Art Gallery from a selection of four, and was universally decreed to be delicious. To support his entry, Thomas also included a poem: "If it were the southern prize/It would have to be Apple and Pear pies/ But seeing how this is northern /I think I would have to turn/To Skipton inspired Coronation Sheep/ Curried lamb cooked in pastry 'til you hear the beep/ Yorkshire art inspired by Manchester soap/ But still tasty enough for the artistic folk" Quite. The pie is on sale in Leeds Tiled Hall Cage during the NAP exhibition and a percentage of the proceeds will be given to local Leeds arts charity Pyramid of Arts.
