Beat those winter blues with colourful new look

January is definitely the most miserable month.

Everybody seems to be spent up after Christmas, the weather is still cold and the days are long and dark. It would have even the most upbeat people moaning. So I think its time to make sure you surround yourself in the things that make you feel good.

Aside from the weather and the fact that it's not Christmas again for another year there are ways to make you feel happier.

Traditionally many of us have a good clean out after Christmas. Giving away the things you don't need or use to a local charity is a great way to kick start the feel-good factor and you'll get a great feeling from your nice clean house too.

Alternatively you could try having a car boot or garage sale. You might just make enough money to treat yourself in the January sales but even if you don't it's a great way to spend time outdoors – just make sure you take a large flask of coffee!

If you haven't been to the sales yet there are some great bargains to be had, especially if you've been saving for something in particular. A new bed or sofa always feels great and will definitely keep you smiling until winter is well out of the way.

My top sofa for the new year is the stunning Brookmead from Barker and Stonehouse. It comes in velvet fabric which is set to be a huge trend for 2010 and is a lovely rich berry shade – ideal for a cosy winter look. Plus it's yours for 1199 in the sale until February 21.

If you can't stretch to a new sofa then the addition of a bright statement chair can do wonders too. The Nia chaise long will definitely brighten your January. It's a true statement piece.

However, if your goal is to spend less in 2010 then maybe just stick to a few choice accessories.

Candles always make a room feel instantly cosier so dot a few round the sitting room and light them when you get in from work. A scented candle will leave the room with a lovely aroma.

My final indulgence tip is to spend time soaking in the

bath. You could even put a few candles in there, too. But I think nothing is nicer than fresh new towels and maybe a new bath mat.

Most people get smellies for Christmas so make the most of these and unwind in a long hot bath.

Hopefully then January will fly by. Happy New Year from all at Barker and Stonehouse.
