Bench mark for celebrities

A SERIES of talking benches voiced by celebrities including Stephen Fry and John Sergeant are being set up at eight different beauty spots.

The National Trust enlisted the stars to record monologues for the bespoke benches, which give listeners a five-minute commentary inspired by their surroundings.

Fry recorded a commentary for a bench at Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk, where he filmed A Cock And Bull Story. He said: “To quote, or nearly quote, W H Davies ‘what is this life if, full of care, we have no time to sit and stare?’ I am very proud to be associated with a bench and I hope I provide comfort, balm and solace for many a weary bottom.”

The recordings also include former England cricket captain David Gower’s talk about “the unstately home” of Calke Abbey in Derbyshire and comedienne Miranda Hart’s love letter to the outdoors at Cragside, Northumberland.
