Best of brass puts Yorkshire in the Christmas spirit

NOTHING captures the sound of Christmas in Yorkshire more than the joyful music produced by the county’s brass bands, all of whom are currently enjoying their busiest month of the year.

There is something reassuringly romantic about the sound of brass, especially during the festive period, and luckily for us no-one does brass better than the musicians from God’s own country.

The current British champions are the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, who pipped rivals Brighouse and Rastrick to the coveted title earlier this year, whilst in May the celebrated Black Dyke Band became European champions for a remarkable thirteenth time.

Having entertained music fans around the world throughout the summer - Grimethorpe played a series of sell-out concerts in Australia, for example – all our bands are now back in the green acres providing their evocative soundtrack to Christmas.

“December is a very important month for a lot of bands because the cashflow we get helps determine what we do next year,” said Peter Haigh, the chairman of Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

“Much of our year is spent playing at festivals and in competitions but it’s always good to come home to Yorkshire and play to fans young and old.”

With its traditional and wholesome appeal – not to mention its affordability - brass has always had cross-generational appeal and a brass band concert remains the perfect family entertainment at Christmas.
