The boudoir belles

Back in the 1980s, Madonna began prancing about dressed in only her scanties and kicked off an underwear-as-outerwear trend that continues to this day.

The Material Girl's Jean Paul Gaultier conical bra was an iconic example, but it was her softer lingerie touches that lingered – wispy silk camisole slip dresses (Like a Prayer) and her see-through lace tops with sexy bras beneath (Desperately Seeking Susan) that continue to inspire. Roll forward to 2010 and as the autumn fashion collections begin to make their way into store, lingerie is more important than ever, crossing over as it does now into sleepwear, daywear, leisurewear and loungewear.

All lines are blurred. Buy a pleated silk, lace-edged cami top, even as part of a lingerie set, and why keep it under wraps when it looks so gorgeous beneath this season's leather aviator jacket?

Look out for beautiful lace corset-style bodices to wear with black skinny jeans or Mad Men retro-style, with below-the-knee pencil skirt, or look for lace and satin structured creation inspired by the Victorian era. Marks & Spencer has come up with the goods when it comes to both shapewear and the whole loungewear look, and Myla, which is new at Harvey Nichols Leeds this month, exudes old style glamour with pieces fit to grace the chicest of boudoirs. Debenhams, meanwhile, has an unbelievable lingerie/boudoir offering, with labels including Floozie by Frost French and B by Ted Baker (heavenly floral prints).

Because that's what we all want these days.

At home, our rooms have blurred so that kitchen blends into dining room and upstairs, the bedroom is no longer just for sex and sleeping but for lounging about reading mags, watching the telly and

tapping away on laptops, all of which leaves rather less time for sex and sleeping, but at least we can look the part in little cami slip dresses teamed either with matching silk robe or, even better, a cosy cashmere cardigan, or even even better, a cape, possibly faux fur, but perhaps better knitted.

That's my indoor autumn wardrobe sorted out, although it's back to the fleecy PJs once October is here.
