A breath of fresh air for al fresco dining

Eating al fresco can be more of a pain than a pleasure, thanks to marauding insects, inappropriate seating and, of course, the weather.

If you're going to entertain outdoors then think of all the practicalities beforehand and you'll have a far better time.

First, the furniture. If your garden table isn't big enough for a sit-down meal then why not move your dining table and chairs outdoors and cover them with a wipe-clean cloth? Fablon has a good range (12.99) available from DIY stores including B&Q and Focus. Cath Kidston also stocks them.

If that doesn't appeal, then look for inexpensive brown furniture on eBay or in second-hand shops. Fold- down tables with extra leaves are common and cost under 20 if you don't mind a few scratches. They can either be painted or covered with a table cloth for the occasion. and are far better than flimsy budget options like wonky, white plastic tables.

Chairs can be mixed and matched then unified with some colourful cushions – try Ikea or Dunelm for inexpensive cushions.

If something more informal is more you, then have a buffet-style table and let guests help themselves. Scatter picnic rugs, pillows and beanbags on the grass for lounging on, but don't forget to provide a few chairs and small side tables (Ikea's sturdy Lack tables are 7.99 each) for those with bad backs. Be practical and use unbreakable (but not paper) plates and glasses.

There are some good cut-price versions from supermarkets but if you want to splash out then check out Emma Bridgewater's beautiful picnicware in her trademark designs. (www.emmabridgewater.co.uk).

If possible use your usual cutlery and don't inflict plastic knives and forks on anyone. Having a table under cover is helpful to keep the heat and the rain off – after all it's a British summer – think about some sort of canopy. Cox and Cox has a great striped one for 250 or you can find canvas gazebos for about 40 in Argos.

Food covers are essential to stop creepy-crawlies and wasp attacks. Matalan's are 4 each, or do what our forbears did before fridges and use some simple squares of muslin – you can buy it cheaply by the metre from fabric stores. For a decorative extra string up some bunting. The Cotton Bunting Company www.cotton bunting.co.uk has a good selection – or you can make some yourself with string, bits of old cloth and fabric glue At night-time light up your space with solar lights (see below) and candles.

Finally, start stocking up for next year. Most stores, including Heal's, which has some fantastic outdoor designs, have started their sales.
