Call of the wild

Fashion embarks upon an African adventure for spring and summer as batik and tribal-inspired prints, together with luscious floral and wild animal patterns, combine to capture a wonderfully wild and yet wearable look.

Best of all, this is a look that can work wherever you want to go, from special events such as weddings and the races through to more casual affairs and daywear.

The key to getting it right for day depends on both restraint and boldness. So rein in wild and colourful prints by teaming with utility safari styles in khaki, stone, camel and taupe – a batik or floral print top (transparent brings in welcome added texture) with stone coloured pencil skirt, for example, or khaki safari shorts. But for special events and evening, pile on the prints and don't be afraid to clash them, especially mixing floral, ikat and tribal inspired prints with animal print pieces and accessories (animal print is a handy clasher as it tends to be monochrome, so easier to work with). Alternatively, for a pared-down look, take a nude stone, khaki or camel safari tunic or shirt dress and add brown leather belt and shoes, then a flash wild print in the form of a scarf or tote bag.

There are some fabulous maxi dresses about – just take a look at the beautiful pink satin one featured here by Yasmin Le Bon for Wallis – perfect for garden parties, summer nights and holidays. Shorter pattern dresses, meanwhile, will look great under military style jackets for smart-casual looks.

Look out too for statement necklaces, bangles and earrings and for shoes, go for strappy high studded heels or a pair of gorgeous gold or embellished flats. Wildly effective.
