Celebrating the re-birth of the blues

AFTER a long period lingering on the sidelines of the colour scene, blue is back in favour.

The last time we saw so much use of it was in the mid-1990s when the

likes of Laura Ashley and Habitat groaned with furniture, fabrics and accessories in this bold primary.

After being relegated to bathrooms and used in its safest pale duck-egg form, it is now on everything and in every hue, from navy to royal blue.

It's a welcome return for one of the most versatile and easiest colours to use. Blue is happy being teamed with almost any other colour, though there are obvious favourites.

Blue with white is as perfect as a summer sky, and add equally fashionable pale grey or cream and you have a sophisticated combination. Warmer blues also work well with browns.

For accent colours, almost anything – including green – will work.

Red is the most dramatic, with yellow a very close second.

Don't over-do these additions as these strong primaries will fight for dominance. A few

cushions or a throw is enough.

Blue works brilliantly in bathrooms and kitchens and although it is seen as a "cold" colour, it is equally good for bedrooms when warmed up with touches of fuchsia or orange.

It also has another use, which, admittedly, is distinctly seasonal here – blue is said to deter flies.

Meanwhile, if it is your favourite colour, you are said to be trustworthy, serene, confident, sensitive... and a perfectionist.
