Classical Preview: Secular setting for choral group pilgrimage

"We had made extensive tours around the world appearing in many fine concert halls, but I wanted to take back into the nation's great cathedrals and churches the music for which it was originally composed and intended."

I was speaking to Harry Christophers after last year's concert, in York Minster, which formed part of The Sixteen's annual Choral Pilgrimage, taking in every important English church.

This year, they are breaking with tradition by opening their tenth pilgrimage, tomorrow night, in the secular surroundings of the Great Hall of Leeds University, before reverting to their customary venues, which will include York Minster, in July.

"We will focus on some of the finest music by three leading Tudor composers, William Byrd, Thomas Tallis and John Shepherd," Christophers added by way of introducing this year's 24 concerts.

The tour features one of the great choral works of the 16th century, Sheppard's massive Media vita in morte sumus, a premiere in the choir's extensive repertoire.

It sits beside the well-known Infelix ego by Byrd and his joyful motet, Laudibus in sanctus, Tallis is represented by his Miserere nostri.

You are advised to book early for York, which opens on March 29.
