Classical Preview: Stars line up for a memorable occasion

You will have to pinch yourself to make sure you are not dreaming, for it would cost you a fortune in Europe's classical music hot-spots to hear the internationally star-studded line-up at the North York Moors Chamber Music Festival.

"I couldn't believe just how relaxed and happy I felt at the end of last year's fortnight," comments the famous cellist, Jamie Walton, who founded the festival last year.

"You grow so accustomed to the pressures placed on musicians, particularly when performing in major concert venues, you tend to forget the pure and simple joy of music-making.

"'Surely this is what music is all about', has been the response from those taking part last year," Walton continues. "We all fell in love with the countryside and the quaint old churches, for this must surely be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

"It's my job to select the theme, this year it is 'Vienna to France'. Then I asked all those who are taking part to offer music they want to play and which is in their repertoire, and we have built the festival in that way."

The national importance of this fledgling festival can be measured by a major Arts Council grant in difficult financial times. Walton's aim is to make this an event for local audiences that removes any suggestion of elitism.

The opening concert, in Lastingham, is sold out, and with eight concerts in eight locations, the artists include the brilliant virtuoso violinist, Jack Liebeck, this year's Classical Brit award winner, with cellist Guy Johnston, pianist Daniel Grimwood, and the Sacconi Quartet.
