Classical Preview: Sunday morning series returns to hotel with a Russian theme

The Harrogate Sunday Morning Series returns to its former residence in the elegant surroundings of the Old Swan Hotel.

They open this Sunday with the region's most popular chamber group, the Endellion Quartet, who bring with them a Russian theme, with the third of Tchaikovsky's quartets and the third of the series Beethoven composed for the Russian-born Prince Razumovsky.

Then a former winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, Artur Pizarro, has chosen a wide-ranging programme that includes Ravel's virtuoso showpiece, Gaspard de la Nuit (Feb 7).

Clarinettist Michael Collins offers a popular programme, including works by Gershwin and Bizet and those creamy tones of the sonata by Poulenc (Mar 7).

The Aquarelle Guitar Quartet offer a seldom-heard musical combination and introduce us to their world of fascinating arrangements and to new works (March 21).

American-born pianist Garrick Ohlsson ends the season with a timely commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Chopin (April 11).

A further event is aimed at children aged five or over and their parents. It takes them on a fun-packed journey into Scottish Folk music with an interactive content to introduce young people to a "live" concert (Feb 21).
