Community DJs take record from Moyles

TWO community DJs have spun Radio 1’s Chris Moyles off the record tables.

DJs Bill Horncastle and Dave Henderson, of Vixen 101, based in Market Weighton, stayed on air for 53 hours to take the world record for the longest radio show.

The feat was an hour longer than the motormouth breakfast show host’s record in March for Comic Relief – but DJ Bill said yesterday he would not be trying again as it was a “bit pointless” and offered to act as a witness to anyone who tried to go one better.

The 47-year-old, whose day job is a tutor for Learndirect, played 603 individual songs and did not repeat a single artist.

To meet exacting Guinness World of Record rules the show had to be videoed and witnessed throughout.

He said: “My low point was between 2am and 7am on the Sunday morning and the girl who works with me said I was virtually incoherent, rambling and mumbling. I was just getting to the point where every hour seemed to drag.”

The pair showered each other with champagne after the final record – Queen’s We Are The Champions.

He said: “I’m glad to have done it. We didn’t have the power of the BBC behind us – we didn’t have a production team, it was just us. I even answered the phone when it rang!

“We pick the music and everything. It just shows good radio can be done without massive production teams.

“Without the support and encouragement of friends right around the world we wouldn’t have been able to see this through.”
