IF every there was a night to go for drama, it’s New Year’s Eve.

While Christmas is all about fun and family, home and hearth, New Year is for going out and making an impact, for putting the world to rights by looking fearless and fabulous, bidding farewell to the old year and entering the new one with an impressive and confident beat.

What has been so distinctive and remarkable about fashion throughout 2013 is the insistence it has placed on luxury and opulence, no matter what the economic circumstances.

Yes, times have continued to be hard – there have been knock-backs, shocks and disappointments but, increasingly as the year has gone on, we have wanted to shine and be decadent in luxe fabrics and gorgeous embellishments. It’s all been about texture, texture and texture, with lace, velvet, jacquard, sequins, beads, feathers, jewels and faux fur all mingling and layering to create a remarkably rich fashion landscape.

As we approach the New Year, it is worth bearing in mind that this sophisticated take on bling, with its strong shapes and drama, is worth holding on to, which is what makes this year’s post-Christmas sales possibly the best ever for snapping up classic statement party wear that you will be able to wear for years to come.

Black brings a subtle edge to rich texture. Look for black lace and velvet dresses, especially those with long lace sleeves, and maxi dresses in neck-to-toe lustrous fabrics that ooze very grown-up and knowing party glamour.

Look out too for embellished jackets and also tuxedo wear, and get matching slim-leg trousers if you can, for an easy, elegantly intriguing outfit that will take you pretty much anywhere you might ever want to go.

With embellishment, seek out jewel, sequin and beading work that looks expensive and beautiful, and take care that it is placed where it flatters you most – on the waist, the shoulders or at the neckline – so that you will always feel confident in it.

The time has come to go out and
find your forever special party outfit.
