Create a cosy haven when it's cold outside

If the North wind is due to blow that means we need to make sure our homes are as comfy and cosy as possible…

Although total hibernation is out of the question (what a pity) then we have to make our time indoors as comfortable as possible and for most of us that means surrounding ourselves with all of our favourite things. So the key to creating this look is carefully chosen clutter and all things we covet at this time of year. Add family treasures, candles, luxurious throws and any other sensual items you might have, to create a womb-like comfort zone.

A January room should be an attack on all the senses – something tactile to touch, beautiful to look at, scrumptious to taste, scents to envelop you and to complete the experience select soothing music to listen to.

For your interior backdrop, steer clear of neutrals and instead go deep hues of classic period colours, such as brick red, rich teal and slate grey; or to create a more exotic winter haven choose rich jewel colours, such as amber, jade and magenta to invoke an eastern feeling.

Designers are emphasising upholstery in wool and textured fabrics that are perfect for your winter haven. Barker & Stonehouse have a fantastic range which are perfect for whiling away the hours in watching movies and eating the left over chocolates from Christmas.

If you're lucky enough to have a real fire, then make the most of it. Throw on a few pinecones or build a fragrant fire using hickory, cherry or ash logs, and what fireplace is complete without a luxurious rug?

Snuggly sheepskin rugs are ideal for winter warming and the epitome of retro chic! Or go for a pure wool rug, the thicker and softer the better.

A word of warning though, with a rug this comfortable you might find that you have to fight the dog for space on it!

Shut out the cold with beautiful window dressings in heavy fabrics such as brocade and velvet. Go for layers, and remember that with this look, more is definitely more.

And for the ultimate in relaxation ensure that your home's lighting doesn't throw a harsh glare over your winter sanctuary.

Ditch overhead lighting in favour of low wattage table lamps and an array of ambient candles.
