'Culture for everyone' as top shows come to schools and clubs

Back To Ours, the first of a series of three festivals taking place during City of Culture 2017, has a line-up including Leeds band The Pigeon Detectives, performing tracks from their new album, and Picture House, a family film festival with a feast of Roald Dahl movies.

There’s also two very different puppet shows - The Story of Mr B by international company Shake Shake Theatre for the young ones and the emotional roller-coaster adventure, Meet Fred, by Hijinx Theatre for the over 14s.

The festival, showing at schools, a shopping centre and social club, also features award-winning shows and performers from the 2016 Edinburgh Festival including JOAN performed by cabaret artist and drag king Lucy Jane Parkinson.

Activist and comedian Mark Thomas brings his multi-award winning show The Red Shed, about Wakefield’s Labour Club, described as “part theatre, part stand-up, part journalism and part activism”, for exclusive Hull dates.

Venues include North Point Shopping Centre, Kingswood and Winifred Holtby Academies, William Gemmell Club, Hymers College and Sirius Academy West.

Hull 2017 CEO Martin Green said: “Back to Ours embodies Hull UK City of Culture’s ethos of culture for everyone.

“We are inviting people in all corners of the city to try something new.

“Our venue partners have thrown open their doors and worked with us to curate the festivals during half term and showcase fantastic shows in their great venue spaces.”
 Tickets for the festival, which runs from February 22 to February 25, start from £2.50 to a maximum of £7.50.

They are available from The Freedom Centre, North Point Shopping Centre and Texas Tony’s Café on Hessle Road.
