On this day in Yorkshire: Learning curve for NCB

THE National Coal Board announced that they were to pay overtime to miners to encourage them to attend meetings on Saturdays after just one man turned up for a productivity course at a Castleford pit.

NCB officials admitted to being mystified when a solitary miner sat through the talk on productivity, sales and coal quality at Allerton Bywater colliery.

“The miner at Allerton Bywater showed great interest for the productivity drive,” said an NCB spokesman. “Why more men didn’t attend the voluntary meeting is a mystery.

“Future courses will take up the whole of Saturday mornings and we believe our offer of overtime will make the best of everybody’s time.”
