A KEY figure in the battle to keep a replica of Amy Johnson's Gipsy Moth in Hull has welcomed an apparent change of heart by the Ministry of Justice.

A campaign began to keep the full-size replica, built by inmates at Hull Jail for City of Culture celebrations, in the city, after it emerged that it was destined to go on permanent display miles away at the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington.

It is not yet clear where the plane, which is currently hanging over the concourse at Paragon Station, will go. But the Yorkshire Air Museum said yesterday it understood the plane was going to stay in Hull.

Artist Leonard Brown, who has been working on the project since 2015, and has had three offers of new homes, including the St Stephen’s mall, said: “The plane was made in Hull for the people of Hull. I am very pleased that there seems to be a change of heart.”

In a statement the Prison Service said: “HMP Hull has been in discussion with a number of organisations about the future home for the Gipsy Moth. We will announce a decision in due course.”
