Fable provides inspiration for sculptor’s return to cathedral

IT IS one of the Bible’s most famous stories – the time when Jesus miraculously fed thousands of hungry followers using just a few fishes and loaves of bread.

Now a North Yorkshire sculptor Linda Thompson has given an updated twist on this story with a “microwaved bread” element in her latest exhibition at Ripon Cathedral.

Called Inner Tendrils, it is a return visit for the sculptor who held a solo exhibition at Ripon Cathedral three years ago and was asked to exhibit again by Dean Keith Jukes.

Ms Thompson, who studied at colleges across Yorkshire, is a founder member of Yorkshire Sculptors Group and has exhibited widely throughout the region since 1985.

Her work is held in collections throughout the world and a sculpture by her of Richard the Third was commissioned by English Heritage for Middleham Castle 15 years ago and is still there today.

While she has exhibited within gallery venues in the past, in recent years she has enjoyed creating work which is a direct response to the environment of local religious and historical venues.

Loaves and fishes which is made of microwaved bread is a direct response to a story from the Bible. The exhibition at Ripon Cathedral runs until Sunday, August 7.
