How do you wear this spring’s candy shades without looking like a fondant fancy? Stephanie Smith has seasonal advice.

Candy crush saga is a major obsession for this coming spring – and I don’t just mean the addictive computer game.

Earmarked as one of the top trends to watch out for 2014, the fondant palette offers vibrant and pulsating but nonetheless pale candy shades of sugared lemon, duck-egg blue, sugar pastel pink, soft peach, pale lavender and mint. Think fondant fancies, as made by Mr Kipling (other cake brands are acceptable).

The High Street has taken up the theme with impressive enthusiasm. Check out Miss Selfridge and Dorothy Perkins for pastel-perfect collections offering many wearable pieces for all ages, just ideal for bringing us all out of the current grey and drizzly doom and gloom of winter. True, there are crop tops and tunic dresses and skirts with transparent panels, but clever layering means that they can work for everyone, so don’t automatically dismiss even a crop top, because it might look gorgeous worn over a silk or chiffon blouse – it’s time we all developed the confidence to make clothes suit us, rather than the other way round.

You can, if you like, wear fondant shades head to toe, as in all the one shade, although this look does work better with different depths and intensities of colour, so team chiffon with leather or a heavier silk.

You can mix candy shades and the effect will be subtle and elegant without overdoing it, especially if you try colour-blocking with just two, so try, say, a lilac jumper with a powder blue skirt.

Experiment with the fondant palette and find the tones that suit your colouring best. If you keep the most flattering tones on your top half, this means you can still wear any shade of skirt and trousers.

Bags and shoes are a subtle way to integrate the trend into your everyday wardrobe, bringing it to life for the office. Try a sugar-lemon blazer layered over a crisp white shirt or candy pink kitten heels paired with smart grey trousers.

Texture and pattern work well in pastels too, so look out for appliqué, transparant panels, laces and especially mesh, which has been massive in fondants on both runways and High Street.
