Channel 5's This Week On The Farm shows Cannon Hall's M1 Barnsley deer rescue

A television show will reveal the moment Yorkshire farmers Rob and David Nicholson were involved in the rescue of a deer on the motorway.

The scenes feature in This Week On The Farm, which has Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley as the host location, on Tuesday.

South Yorkshire Police called the farmers after a deer was struck by a car on the M1 motorway at junction 37 near Barnsley.

When the farmers arrived, they found the shocked young buck lying on the hard shoulder after suffering a head injury.

Rob Nicholson said: “We were able to get the deer into our trailer safely, allowing officers to re-open the carriageway."

The deer was taken back to the farm in the trailer.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a Skype consultation was set up between the farmers and vet Matt Smith of Donaldson's Vets. He was able to advise the farmer to give the deer anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relief.

Rob added: “Once we had given the deer pain relief and drugs, we left him in the trailer in a quiet area overnight to recover. The next morning, he was looking much brighter and alert."

Mr Smith visited the farm the next day to check on the deer.

PC Sam Clifford, from South Yorkshire Roads Policing Team, said: "We had to shut the M1 at junction 37 as the deer was on the hard shoulder, he said this sort of thing was normally rare but due to lockdown deer on motorways had become more common due to the roads being quieter."

The show is presented by Yorkshire-based star Helen Skelton and Jules Hudson.

The story will feature on Tuesday's This Week on The Farm on Channel 5 at 8pm.
