Yorkshire film and TV productions The Personal History of David Copperfield and Channel 4's The Great nominated for Golden Globes

Dev Patel has been nominated for the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical/Comedy for his role in The Personal History of David Copperfield, which was partly filmed in Hull Old Town - a stand-in for 1840s Dickensian London - with the help of the Screen Yorkshire agency.

The Great, which partly filmed at Castle Howard near York, is also nominated for Best Musical/Comedy Series.

Emerald Fennell was also nominated for directing Promising Young Woman, while Riz Ahmed was recognised for his portrayal of a punk drummer battling hearing loss in Sound Of Metal.

Netflix’s royal show The Crown is up for Best Drama Series, while the BBC’s Small Axe is in the line-up for Best Television Motion Picture.

Three women are among the five nominated for best director - Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, Regina King for One Night in Miami and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin also scored nominations in the acting categories.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died in August last year aged 43 after a cancer diagnosis, is nominated in the Best Actor category for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Nominations were announced yesterday during a virtual ceremony hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson as the traditional awards season has been disrupted by the pandemic.

The 78th Golden Globes will be broadcast from New York and Los Angeles for the first time, with comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler splitting the bi-coastal hosting duties. Fey will be live from Rockefeller Centre in Manhattan while Poehler will present from the ceremony’s usual home of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California on February 28.

Nominees for Best Actress - Motion Picture Drama are: Viola Davis for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Andra Day for United States vs. Billie Holiday, Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman, Frances McDormand for Nomadland and Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman.

In the actor counterpart of the same award, nominations are: Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Anthony Hopkins for The Father, Gary Oldman for Mank and Tahar Rahim for The Mauritanian.

Olivia Colman is nominated in the category of Best Television Actress – Drama Series for her role as the Queen in The Crown, alongside: Jodie Comer for Killing Eve, Emma Corrin for her role as Princess Diana in The Crown, Laura Linney for Ozark and Sarah Paulson for Ratched.

Nods for the actor category are: Jason Bateman for Ozark, Josh O’Connor for his portrayal of Prince Charles in The Crown, Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul, Al Pacino for Hunters and Matthew Rhys for Perry Mason.

Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult are nominated in the Best Television Actress and Actor categories in a Musical/Comedy Series for The Great.

Gillian Anderson and Helena Bonham Carter, who played late former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Princess Margaret in The Crown, are nominated in Best Supporting Actress - Television.
