The statement bag, the perfect boots, the most beautiful piece of bling – there’s no doubt about it, accessories can transform even the blandest of outfits, lifting them from the everyday to the sublime.

This season, add a colour pop to a little black dress or charcoal suit with bright red boots or a bold fuchsia bag. Or key into the moody florals trend with a pair of darkly blooming heels or clutch. From monochrome to androgyny, accessories make it easy to channel a seasonal theme without having to break the bank.

For a heritage feel, Marks & Spencer has just launched a Best of British range, celebrating home-grown talent, production and sustainability. There are edited womenswear and menswear collections of timeless pieces with the emphasis on British quality and craftsmanship, some using fine Yorkshire cloths. Look out for beautiful wool scarves, leather Chelsea boots and brogues for women, and boots, ties and bags for men.

The humble plastic bag is rarely considered a fashion accessory, but it could be, thanks to a thought-provoking exhibition opening next week at Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Renowed handbag designer Bill Amberg has joined the project to raise the status of the disposable carrier, creating a range of limited edition plastic bags, displayed as part of the Plastic is Precious exhibition. There will be a plastic bag amnesty, managed by University of Sheffield students, for shoppers to exchange their current bags for ones with slogans that remind that plastic is not to be wasted.
