Flower show prepares for another year

I first visited the Leeds Flower Show some 40 years ago. It was already an old-established and well-loved event with an admirable history.

Looking back through the mists of time and ever-thickening spectacle lenses, I can recall thinking that this was what a flower show should be like, and I promised myself that I would visit again. Sadly, I never have.

Next month, however, I have the chance to make amends when Leeds Horticultural Society presents The Leeds Flower, Vegetable & Craft Show 2010, at The Grammar School at Leeds, Alwoodley Gates, Harrogate Road, Leeds.

It's a wonderful title, for a wonderful event which is almost ready to celebrate its 150th birthday – something of a shock to horticultural society's members who have just discovered that the show is older than they thought.

Newspaper archives have revealed that the first Leeds Flower Show was held in 1864, at the Leeds Volunteer Rifles' Army drill hall in Oxford Place.

The society's own archives date back to just 1885. All the more reason to celebrate this August 7 and 8 when the show benches will be filled with vegetables, fruits and flowers.

There will also be arts and crafts, photographs, home-brewed beer

and wine, domestic produce, a

gardeners' question time and much, much more.
