Food Matters: Farmshops fill gap after snow

The region's farmshops have been coming to the aid of stranded shoppers during the recent freezing weather.

A survey by the Regional Food Group for Yorkshire and Humber (RFG), has found that many farmshops in the region were able to supply shoppers, when larger retailers closed.

The snow and ice in the week before Christmas meant some major food retailers shut stores and distribution centres had problems keeping the shelves stocked.

Some farmshops such as Quarton's in York, were able to utilise their tractors and vans to make deliveries.

RFG Chief Executive Jonathan Knight says: "It's this caring and individual service where farmshops really shine."
