Food Matters: Fish finalists

David Jenkinson and Kirill Savonins from Café Fish, Scarborough have been selected as two of the 10 UK finalists for the "Fish Dish Challenge" at the world renowned competition Le Salon Culinaire International de Londres.

The "Fish Dish Challenge" is sponsored by the British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF). It is part of Salon Culinaire's schedule of competitions, to be held in front of a 200-strong live theatre audience at the Hotelympia show on March 1 at ExCeL London.

David, aged 26 from Scarborough, trained as a chef in the Royal Navy and has worked at Caf Fish for five years and is currently the head chef. Kirill, aged 25 and also from Scarborough, trained in Latvia and has been a chef at the caf for three years.

Mark Perlaki, a sommelier from Hotel Du Vin in Harrogate, has won a coveted place in the Sommelier of the Year finals after winning the regional heat held in Manchester.

Mark will now compete in the national final to be held in London in April. Tasks involved in reaching the final included blind tastings, food and wine matching and correctly opening and serving Champagne.

Awards deadline

Organisers of this year's Northern Hospitality Awards have announced a deadline extension giving hospitality hopefuls until Friday, February 26 to submit their entries.

Due to a last minute influx of entries, Moorfield Media, which organises the ceremony, has granted the week-long extension to give chefs, restaurants, bars and hotels from across the North West, Yorkshire and the North East a greater chance of winning the coveted title. The awards, which are a celebration of culinary and hospitality skill, will take place on the evening of Monday, April 12 at The Hilton Deansgate, Manchester.
