Former patient takes up charity job

A Sheffield woman diagnosed with a brain tumour 15 years ago is now working for the charity that helped to save her life.

Carol Binney, from Nether Edge, has joined the local charity Neurocare as retail trading and volunteer manager. The charity raises money and supports the neurosciences department

at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

In 1995, Carol was suffering from severe migraines. After being sent for a scan she was diagnosed with a seven centimetre benign brain tumour.

Carol said: "Just three days after being diagnosed I was in the Hallamshire Hospital ready to have major brain surgery. I was in intensive care for four days after the operation and in hospital for two weeks in total.

"The staff at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital were absolutely fantastic and I have nothing but praise for what they did for me – without them I wouldn't be here today."

Carol, now 46, is responsible for expanding Neurocare's retail activities and nurturing volunteers. Her team runs two gift and book trolleys and a charity shop within the hospital complex for staff and patients, plus their visiting family and friends.

The services are a friendly hub of activity at the hospital and all the money raised helps boost Neurocare's funds and ability to purchase life-saving equipment not available on the NHS.

The success of the charity shop is dependent on donations from members of the public. A collection service is available.
