Friends from floods have a jolly time

THREE neighbours brought together by the floods of 2007 produced one of Hull’s jolliest street parties. Every neighbour, bar those who’d gone on holiday, showed up to a huge spread laid out under fluttering bunting in Ingleton Avenue in west Hull.

Fiona Bolder, who organised the event along with Janet Hall and Clare Oxley, managed to recreate the spirit of street parties of yesteryear.

She said: “We decided to do something to include everybody.

People have bought along extended members of their own family so it’s been a real family and community event.”

A fire engine, pin the crown on the Princess and tug of war topped a day brimming with convivial cheer.

Mrs Bolder said: “We have been overwhelmed by the fact that everybody wanted to be involved. There are people who have been here for 46 years to those who have lived here just a few months and everyone has come to support it.”

Earlier children waved flags furiously as a large screen inside St Stephen’s Neighbourhood Centre, on Annandale Road, in east Hull, showed the Royal bride arriving at Westminster Abbey.

Margaret Tennison said: “The children and everybody have been looking forward to this day. At first it was slow taking off but people want something nice for a change.”
