Going back to our roots

Despite the upsurge of interest in "trendy" vegetables such as summer squash, Oriental greens and chilli peppers, mail order seedsman DT Brown says that traditional root vegetables, particularly parsnips, are still popular.

"There is no doubt British gardeners still love growing and eating their root crops, but we are seeing they now prefer improved hybrid versions of old favourites," says the company's general manager, Tim Jeffries.

The popularity of root vegetables is reflected in the variety of its newly introduced range of vegetable seed tapes where the best seller is the Winter Stews Collection, which comprises pre-sown tapes of parsnip, carrot, swede and celeriac.

Even turnips and swedes, long regarded as the "Cinderellas" of the vegetable world, remain popular,

with sales of newcomers Turnip 'Armand' and Swede 'Ruby' both exceeding expectations.
