Golden Fleece

Wool really comes into its own for autumn/winter 2010 as designers enjoy playing with its versatility and luxuriousness.

From fine knits to chunky, wool allows for endless creative possibilities, keying into pretty much every trend for the season.

At its simplest, take one cashmere fine-knit sweater, in camel, or black, or go for cream, pale blue or dusky pink if you prefer, and team with camel trousers or leather skirt for the perfect exercise in minimalism.

Or go boho, sporting a cable-knit long cardi over your floral maxi dress for the ideal summer-to-winter leap of style.

Layering is probably what wool does best and this season there are knitted cardigans, waistcoats and gilets of all lengths, from cropped

to maxi, to wear over other knits, or try teamed withlace, silks, leather and suede. The advantage of wool is that it can add depth and texture to other materials, its natural sheen and feel bringing richness to an outfit.

A long fine knit cardigan over a tailored shift dress is somehow so season, a touch of casual chic to break the formality.

Wool on wool is a fine blend, especially mixing textures of lambswool and cashmere for a cleverly cosy appeal.

Try a cashmere shift dress with a Fairisle scarf and look out too for woollen tights, some of which are as fine and smooth as silk.

Meanwhile, the knitted dress is a key piece this season, with plenty of tunic styles and maxi versions, in a variety of wools and textures.

As with jumpers, remember that only the softest and finest wool will feel good all day next to your skin, especially if it's in any way sensitive. Such is fashion's love for wool this season that it is used to make knitted bags, or as a trim on boots, and there are even knitted necklaces and bangles. The knitted scarf has never looked so current.

For the ultimate in luxury, look out for cashmere hoodies and pants –

it's the only way to lounge about the home this winter.
