Guy swaps high fashion for a Romanian mission of mercy

The spring/summer fashion season is just beginning to bloom – a hectic time of year for those in the fashion business – but Guy Hudson, owner of Lynx Menswear and Womenswear in Harrogate, has a vital engagement to carry out before he can concentrate his mind and energy on the new ranges.

On Monday, he set off from Leeds as part of Yorkshire Aid Convoy for a nine-day 4,500km round trip to deliver much-needed aid to Sfantu George, Romania, taking more than 2m worth of essential goods in five

trucks, including surgical equipment, walking aids, beds, wheelchairs, medical supplies, plus toys, games, clothing, footwear and toiletries – "Anything that makes a difference to these impoverished parts of the

world," said Guy, just before he set off.

"The trucks are driven by various volunteers, often with no previous truck driving experience, like myself. We drive through Europe to Romania crossing several frontiers, involving logistical nightmares.

"On clearing all customs, we all, with the help of the local Round Table and other volunteers, unload the lorries and at this point it becomes obvious why you as an individual have become involved in such a

worthy cause."

Based in Hunlset, Leeds, the charity set up by businessmen, Mark Murphy and Simon Hartley to provide humanitarian aid to the poor of Eastern Europe.

The aim is that 100 per cent of all the money and aid donated goes directly to the people in need.

All involved are volunteers and give their time and services free, paying their own hotel and food cost for the trip.

Guy, a trustee of the charity, said: "We will get to see two or three projects that will be receiving the donated aid, usually while waiting for the frustratingly long time it takes to clear the trucks through the customs procedure.

"Then, it is about turn and head for home, all in a nine-day trip. Home sweet home."
