Harewood proves that it's top of the pops

Harewood has once again proved why it is one of Yorkshire's most popular visitor attractions, as its 100 acres of stunning gardens have been voted the top in a national competition to find the UK's favourite gardens to visit.

Harewood swept the board in the competition run by BBC Gardener's World Magazine to find the best garden to visit in the north of England.

Voted for by the public, Harewood, near Leeds, came top in every category including "Most romantic garden", "Best afternoon tea", "Best day out for kids" and "All-round favourite".

Thousands of people voted via the magazine's website and the gardens will now feature as part of a national "gardens to visit" guide, launched this week.

Head gardener Trevor Nicholson, who is now in his 16th year at Harewood, said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Harewood. The fact that we won every category is a testament to the range of beautiful gardens we have for the public to enjoy.

"I would encourage people to visit Harewood over the next couple of months and see the gardens in full bloom. We have a stunning display of flowers on the Terrace Gardens and an array of exotic plants in the Himalayan Gardens as well as a wide range of traditional fruit and vegetables growing in the Walled Garden."

The Himalayan Garden, which was opened last year by Alan Titchmarsh, is home to a diverse range of exotic plants including primulas, Himalayan poppies, orchids and cobra lilies, and will celebrate its first birthday in May.

Visitors can also enjoy one of the many walks and trails through the Lakeside Gardens, which offer more than 32 acres of traditional woodland flora and fauna.
