Health Matters: Share your story at week of events

BUPA care home residents throughout Yorkshire are appealing for budding storytellers to step forward and help them enjoy a day of classic tales and stories as part of their plans to mark National Storytelling Week.

The art of storytelling is celebrated each year during National Storytelling Week (January 29 to February 5), which aims to increase awareness of the value of sharing stories. Altogether, over 300 Bupa care homes are hosting storytelling events throughout the UK, inviting local communities to join them and teaming up with schools to get children involved in writing and sharing their own tales.

Siobhan Drane, Bupa's community affairs manager, said,"Good old-fashioned storytelling brings generations together."

Helping young people reach out

ChildLine has launched a new online film to help young people understand how the service can support them.

ChildLine's Making Contact film shows a boy talking through his fears of speaking up about his problem and the barriers stopping him from getting in touch with ChildLine.

The film goes on to show how ChildLine helped him once he reached out – www.childline.org.uk/Videos/Pages/ContactingChildLine. The film also highlights the different ways young people can get in touch – via the helpline on 0800 1111, or 1-2-1 chats and emails on the ChildLine website.

Judy Bedford, ChildLine service manager for Yorkshire and the North East, said: "For some young people a barrier to contacting ChildLine is the fear of the unknown. Ultimately, we want to show young people that ChildLine is there for them whatever their worry."

The film is available at www.childline.org.uk. It is also available for teachers to upload via the resources for schools section of the NSPCC website – www.nspcc.org.uk/inform.

Confusion over alcohol units

While more than four in five adults have heard of "alcohol units", only two in five of these can equate the term to actual drinks – according to new research by alcohol awareness charity Drinkaware.

To help consumers gain a better understanding of units, Drinkaware has posted 2.3 million unit and calorie calculators to households across the UK. Less than a third of those surveyed knew the recommended daily alcohol unit intake for their own gender.
