Hospital helideck crew's fundraising calendar

The helicopter deck fire crew who ensure the safety of aircraft landing on the roof of Leeds General Infirmary's Jubilee Wing have launched a fundraising calendar.

The Leeds Helideck Heroes calendar for 2011 features pictures of the volunteer crew, whose role is vital to ensure the safety of landings at LGI by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. All the crew have day jobs as facilities staff at the hospital, and have undergone gruelling firefighter training for their helicopter deck role.

The pictures in the calendar show different aspects of the team's work high above the rooftops of Leeds, as well as some shots of training in progress. There are also pictures of some of the crew with former patient Sarah Wise, who came back to the hospital to say thank you for the help and care she received.

Sarah, who was rushed to the LGI by helicopter after a horrific car accident near York two years ago, has made a full recovery but needed a month in hospital. She described the fire crew as "my true heroes" and was delighted to back the calendar. While most of the pictures show the fire crew at work and different seasons – including clearing the helicopter deck of snow in the worst of last year's winter – in true fundraising calendar tradition there is a final cheeky shot to round off the year showing some of the firefighters wearing just their boots and strategically-placed fire helmets!

Installing floodlights will help improve the safety of landings at the helicopter deck, which is one of the busiest of any NHS hospital in the country, handling hundreds of flights every year.

The calendar is a strictly limited edition and costs 5.50. To order one please contact Sharon Edwards on 0113 392 6803 or email [email protected]. All proceeds go to the Helideck Trust Fund.
