How to keep the spirit of summer alive at home

It's that time of year when we all knuckle down and settle back to work or studies after our summer holidays.

I always hope for an Indian summer, but I never expect it. Autumn is on its way, it's getting darker earlier and summer will increasingly become a dim and distant memory. But instead of despairing at the prospect of another long, British winter, why not take inspiration from your summer holidays to brighten up tired dcor and inject some sunshine into your home? Whether you have enjoyed a staycation or have travelled to far-flung, exotic climes, there will be something from your holiday that will help you to brighten a room and remind you of a happy time.

You might have actually bought some artwork while you were away. If that's the case, choose the room you want to display it, and take inspiration from the piece in introducing a new colour palette, or style.

I think furniture ranges like the Starbay with its elegant, deep rosewood finish, give a luxurious, feel to a bedroom. Add a few exotic touches, such as a ceiling fan and some statement house plants and you can close the door on the world outside.

When I am away, I often pick up a coffee table book featuring images of the places I have visited. If you're looking to really transform a room, look at the images in those books and remind yourself of what it was about a place you have visited that you loved. Take inspiration from the architecture, countryside, food, music and style of the people who live in the places you have stayed.

Lighting can quickly change the feel of a room, too. Introducing lamps to brighten darker corners can help make a space more inviting, or create a more dramatic ambience. Using scented candles can also help to recreate the exotic atmosphere of a far-flung place. The Indian Chai Tea candle is a favourite of mine. Maps and postcards from your travels can be used to create a feature if framed and displayed well. Taking inspiration from these personal items will not only give you a talking point with visitors, but should remind you of sunnier times on the darkest of winter days.
