It’s only rock ‘n’ roll but Leeds likes it! Stones show set for DVD release

Mick Jagger and co have announced that their legendary outdoor concert at Roundhay Park in the summer of 1982 is being given a release on DVD and Blu-ray.

Carefully restored and featuring newly-mixed sound, the footage shows Jagger at his strutting, swaggering best as his bandmates rattle through a setlist packed with classic tracks such as Let’s Spend The Night Together, Brown Sugar, Start Me Up and Jumpin’ Jack Flash.

News of the November 20 release was welcomed today by Ian De-Whytell, boss of Leeds-based Crash Records and one of the 120,000 or so fans who attended the Roundhay Park gig.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “It was a brilliant day. The sun was shining and the Stones were on top form.

“I was there with my brother Chris and we managed to get a great spot very near the front.

“It’s one of the most memorable gigs I’ve ever been to and it felt as though the huge crowd was witnessing something very special, the greatest band in the world at their absolute peak.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing it all again on DVD.”

Roundhay Park was the final date on a European tour mounted by the Stones in support of their 1981 album Tattoo You.

It also marked the last time pianist Ian Stewart, the so-called ‘Sixth Stone’, played live on stage with the band.

The DVD’s release comes just months after the Stones put out an audio recording of their 1971 gig at the University of Leeds’s Refectory venue as part of a super deluxe reissue of the seminal Sticky Fingers.

The Rolling Stones are just one of an illustrious roll-call of global music superstars to have played Roundhay Park.

Acts who rocked the site in the 1980s included Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Genesis.

And, more recently, U2 and Robbie Williams performed at Roundhay in 1997 and 2006 respectively.

They helped establish Leeds as one of the country’s live music capitals with other famous gigs including Happy Mondays and David Bowie.
