Jazz Preview: Liebman puts in the extra miles for classic role

CELEBRATED saxophonist Dave Liebman assumes the Miles Davis trumpet role in a performance of Sketches of Spain with the Leeds College of Music Contemporary Jazz Orchestra at The Venue, in Leeds, tonight.

The legendary Davis-Gil Evans album, based on Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez, relied heavily on Miles's haunting contributions.

Liebman, who addresses the 16th Leeds International Jazz Conference at the college today, played with Davis and Elvin Jones at the start of a distinguished career in which he has recorded prolifically.

Tomorrow evening, Jazz in the Spa at Boston Spa offers the attractive combination of Karen Sharp with fellow saxophonist Tommy Whittle and that most mellifluous of trombonists, Roy Williams.

Meanwhile, over at The Shed in Hovingham village hall, the irresistible Gwyneth Herbert will be performing pieces from her warmly received new album in the company of guitarist Al Cherry, bassist Sam Burgess and drummer Dave Price.
