Jazz Preview: New club proves a big hit in Hebden Bridge

It is always a pleasure to report the success of a new jazz club in Yorkshire, and HX7 Jazz, in Hebden Bridge, is a shining example.

The club opened in January in the wake of a spell of dispiriting news, including the demise of Leeds Jazz and the Puzzle Hall sessions at Sowerby Bridge.

Four months later, organiser Dave Nelson is "over the moon" at the way the club – its name is the local post code – has taken root at the Trades Club, in Holme Street.

"We are making it very clear that HX7 belongs to the people who come to our monthly sessions," says Dave.

"Comments and suggestions are welcomed. For instance, people can make their own CD compilations of things to play during the evening.

"We've got candles, tablecloths, good food, fine music and some very interesting things in the pipeline for the autumn. We are also looking to reinstate the Sunday lunchtime gigs which were once a feature

of the Trades Club programme."

Next Thursday's visitors to HX7 Jazz are Saxophone Summit, an outstanding sextet led by the London-based American bassist, Michael Janisch.

Two of Britain's most gifted saxophonists, Nigel Hitchcock and Alex Garnett, are joined by one of New York's top tenor players,

Joel Frahm. Pianist Ross Stanley and drummer Steve Brown complete a

line-up which should consolidate HX7's growing reputation.

Future attractions at HX7 include the Sarah Ellen Hughes band, with saxophonist Dave O'Higgins, on May 20, the Sam Crockatt Quartet, on June 10, and guitarist Eduardo Niebla, on July 8.
