Jazz Preview: Pay attention to Waterman’s history lesson

Steve Waterman, one of the most dependable of British jazz trumpeters in terms of quality and substance, came up with a challenging theme for the project he brings to Sheffield Jazz at the Millennium Hall next Friday.

Buddy Bolden Blew It! is a history of jazz trumpet told through tunes composed by legendary figures including Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown.

All these and more are to be found on an album by Waterman on the Mainstem label. They provide the essence of what promises to be an absorbing evening with Steve performing alongside Alec Dankworth on bass, Anthony Kerr on vibraphone, Chris Allard on guitar and Dave Barry on drums.

A daunting prospect? Absolutely, but if anyone can make it work it is Steve Waterman, whose outstanding capabilities are sometimes under-rated.

Nobody plays more ferocious saxophone in British jazz than Denys Baptiste, who will be in full flight at the National Centre for Early Music in York tomorrow night with a programme drawn from his new album Identity By Subtraction. Baptiste leads a quartet which includes bassist Gary Crosby with whom he worked in Nu Troop and Jazz Jamaica.

Meanwhile, at Wakefield Jazz tonight, drummer Asaf Sirkis will be coaxing the best from his gifted colleagues Tassos Spiliotopoulos, guitar, and Yaron Stavi, bass.
