Liven up loft living by salvaging a retro look

For a number of years the trendy loft living look has remained consistent – ultra-modern shapes, lots of chrome, splashes of colour and lots and lots of white.

But now it's taken a new direction – inspired by the salvage look that is still very popular. With the ability to get hold of great vintage items loft living has gone retro.

Modern shapes are replaced by the silhouettes of the '60s and '70s, the chrome combined with leather and plastic, splashes of bright colour are replaced by browns, blacks and shades of grey, and the white replaced

by exposed brick walls.

For me, this look is easier to live with than the lofty looks that preceded it. Less white means I'm less likely to worry about actually using the furniture in case of spillages. Plus the vintage-style sofas are super comfortable compared to the ultra-modern designs where looks count for everything.

To create your own retro pad you'll need a fairly large room – loft living doesn't work in cramped spaces. If there's a wall of exposed brick, you're on to a winner but if not and you really want to go for this look, you could consider making one – but it's not essential. Paint any remaining walls white. Rustic wood floorboards are a must-have for this look so check under your carpets and get sanding. Add in large skirting board in a natural colour.

No retro loft look is complete without that vintage-style sofa. Whether you want a Chesterfield or something a little different, Barker and Stonehouse has a great selection. You could opt for the Asquith, which is a lovely button-back number, or something like the Isaac with its chrome legs and masculine styling. To complement your sofa you'll need a great coffee table. My choice would be something boxy like the Tegan, which is on wheels (very handy!) or the Maya table; both are available at www.barkerand stonehouse.co.uk. Plus, if you have the space, a great statement chair can bring the room together and fill any awkward empty spaces. The Dessau chair would be my choice. Scatter Jan Constantine Union Jack cushions about for colour.

Finally, scour antique shops and eBay for any additional accessories. A stack of vintage books in a corner of the room would make a great lamp table.
