The lives of others... a hoard of history that reveals the hidden story of the past

The West Yorkshire Archive Service collects and preserves historical records of all kinds dating from the 12th-century to the present day.

If the boxes of documents stored at the new facility were laid end to end it would stretch 21 miles – the same distance as the English Channel.

The service helped Sir Patrick Stewart uncover more about his family for the BBC series Who Do You Think You Are? which was screened earlier this year. The Mirfield-born actor uncovered details of his father’s war career and the deep emotional scars fighting on the frontline left.
