THEY may hail from sunny California but there is clearly something about the muddy fields of Leeds that appeals to rock legends Metallica.

The multi-million selling band were last night confirmed as one of the main stage headliners at next summer’s Leeds Festival.

It will be the third time that they have played the Bramham Park bash, with their previous appearances coming in 2003 and 2008.

They also performed at the event’s sister festival in Reading back in 1997.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said: “We are obviously beyond thrilled to be returning to headline the magnificent and mighty double shot at Reading and Leeds. We are practically the house band. Bring it!”

Also playing are American post-hardcore favourites Pierce The Veil, drum and bass maestro Wilkinson, Swedish punk band Refused, hip-hop stars Run The Jewels and indie rockers Manchester Orchestra.

Pierce The Veil’s Vic Fuentes said: “We’ve been dying to do these festivals ever since we started touring in the UK! It’s such an honour to be a part of something that people wait all year round to see.”

Festival boss Melvin Benn, meanwhile, said: “Metallica’s amazing live show promises to be a favourite with rock, metal and genuine music fans at the UK’s most important music festival, perfectly topping a bill of brilliant acts from across the genres.

“I’m looking forward to revealing the rest of the festival line-up, which will feature the absolute best of rock, indie, dance and hip-hop and will only add to the amazing atmosphere that makes Reading and Leeds so special.”

Next year’s event will take place as usual over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Tickets are on sale now, with weekend passes costing £205 plus £8 booking fee and postage. Early entry permits are priced £20.
